I love slack and it is a perfect tool for our teams. But! I travel a lot in trains with bad cellphone reception. The iOS app has an offline mode. The Mac app needs this feature even more.
The lack of hashtags (or some form of metadata) and an ability to search or filter by hashtags forces people to move things into channels. Everything should be created as a post as otherwise it is impossible to comment. Commenting inline can be ineffective as multiple conversations in a channel can be occuring. Too many functions and links pop open a browser instead of opening in the app.
This application is not purely native (e.g. opens a web browser for some settings) but that’s to be expected given the main Slack UI is HTML5. This type of desktop integration is meant to give you auto-login on startup, dock persistance and integration with native Mac OS X notifications. It does all those things. Slack is overall feature-rich and yet remains lightweight. This and all the related apps perform very well. I only wish the desktop app could be made more narrow like an instant messaging client (I think that’s coming).
The Mac app is a wrapper for the web app. It still works pretty well though I’ll be excited to see what will happen with their next version
Weve adopted Slack in our office and cut back internal email by approx. 90%. Were loving its ease and all the intigrations. Looking forward to watching this app and service get better still.
I’m a big Twitter user and this is spot on using today’s communcation tools. So long Hipchat. Slack is the new donkey kong!
This is everything my team and I were looking for, please update the iOS app with more features! I love this app!
Slack has been super helpful for our company, we use it on the web, on mobile and with this app. Previously we tried a number of team chat apps but none stuck. Slack’s definitely outlasted all of them.
Create a team, invite members, and get to work. While this app does not replicate every feature of the browser version, it is evolving, with new features every update. Slack gives you the sense that your work and contributions are not fading into the ether. This is not email. Build on your work, your teams work, and get things done.
It’s unstable, has choppy scrolling, and ‘web-isms’ like non-native dialogs opening inside the main window.
Soon as I open Slack, login to my team, view a Channel for about 10 seconds then it immediately crashes. Using OSX Yosemite.
We are using it for our research group. Very nice interface. We like it a lot.
The only bad thing is they try way too hard in their release notes to be funny.
Clicking the Google sign in button does nothing, therefore making the app useless.
thanks for the update!
I run a large health treatment team and have a number of supervisory and administrative responsibilities. Things were getting pretty chaotic, not knowing if conversations were happening in email or instant message. Where it was we last left off etc. Slack’s really helped consoldate this and having it available cross device is great. The simple /reminder service has been a blessing and allows me to stay within a single app (would love to be able to have it cross talk to other reminders by IFTTT though). We are using the rss feed to bring in readings essential for sub-groups, the twitter feeds to keep an eye on our social media campaigns (facebook, etc next please!!). I also do contract for two other employers and am moving them to Slack, which is great because you can jump between organizations from within the APP and don’t have to do new logins.
This is the best thing to happen to the world since sliced bread.
I lovelovelove this app — I now have a conduit to my assistant… i love that we can have secret chats while customers are standing in front of her. It helps with seamless customer service. That we can effortlessly share documents without switching apps is fantastic! I’m trying to get my family to sign on as not everyone uses iphones this would make family chatting so much easier. Finally I love the touch of humour (Cinderella Complex? hours of therapy? Hilarious!)
I use Slack everyday on all my devices. It’s a well thought out tool with on-going enhancements. Definitely filled a gap in our suite of productivity tools.
